FBI follows up on poker scam bust

 July 26, 2007, 3:36 pm (2 years ago)
The FBI is to examine further the actions of a group of gambling scammers who were caught rigging high stakes poker games at the Borgota Casino and Resort in Atlantic City.

The gang went to great lengths to set up the scam, using state of the art technology including tiny video cameras and earpieces. They also set up high tech monitoring equipment in a hotel room so they could monitor poker games.

One of the men arrested was a casino industry insider who actually made a living from advising casino owners how to prevent such scams.

The intention of the gang was to monitor the game using video and audio equipment, transmit it back to the hotel room where a gang member would advise an accomplice at the poker table.

Although the arrests were made on June 7, details of the bust were only released this week. Steve Forte, 51, of Las Vegas, was charged with attempted theft by deception and conspiracy by authorities.

Forte, who committed the crime along with Joseph T. Ingargiola, 50, Playa del Rey, California; Stephen Phillips, 52, Las Vegas; and James C. Harrison, 41, of Duluth, Minn., has produced videos on how to thwart video scammers.

All of the defendants are free on bail. The investigation is ongoing.
