Online gambling on the rise in Britain

It said that 8.6 percent of those surveyed said they had used at least one form of remote gambling in the previous month, compared to 7.4 percent a year earlier. The latest figure is based on 8,000 adults surveyed between June 2006 and June 2007.

However, if respondents playing the National Lottery remotely are not included, the number partaking in remote gambling drops to 5.9 percent.
Young males are most likely to participate in remote gambling using computer, laptop or a hand held device. Mobile phones and interactive/digital TV are also popular choices for those partaking.
The National Lottery and poker are the most popular types of remote gambling.
The Gambling Commission is the regulatory body for casinos, bingo, gaming machines and lotteries in the United Kingdom.
These latest statistics mark an improved system whereby the Commission can distinguish between remote gambling methods, and determine the age and sex of gamblers.
It also allows for the measurement of the participation in the various forms of gambling available remotely.
Each survey is carried out over a three-month period and the results are published quarterly.
