The Business Day newspaper said that the Department of Trade and Industry has tabled the National Gambling Amendment Bill that seeks to prevent criminal elements entering the industry, as well as protecting gamblers.
Providers of remote gaming services must ensure no underage players engage in gambling activities, must not extend credit for gambling and must pay out immediately on all wins.
The Bill, which was introduced by Trade and Industry Minister Mandisi Mpahlwa also says that all players must have accounts with a financial institution.
This recent move to regulate online gambling in South Africa has been expected for the last two years since the government there received the results of a worldwide study of online gambling.
