The figures were calculated to ease the fears of many South African politicians who were concerned that the online gambling industry would overshadow traditional gambling casinos. The Casino Association of South Africa had alleged that the introduction of online gambling in the region would have a negative impact on the current casinos. According to Acting Deputy Director General of the Trade and Industry, Fungai Sibanda, “There is no apparent threat to the land-based casino from interactive gambling”.
