Premiership Football

 August 20, 2008, 9:05 am (3 months ago)
With just 1 game of the season ended, bookmakers have set up Chelsea as the latest most wanted for the English Premiership. The Blues romped to a 4-0 win during last season’s shocking package Portsmouth, whilst Obafemi Martins’ aim for Newcastle was enough to hold shielding champions Manchester United to a draw at Old Trafford.

The point gained by Newcastle scuppered those who customarily back the Big Four – Chelsea, Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal – in collector bets, as United were the only team with decreased points on the starting day. A win for the shielding champions could have cost Britain's bookies over Ј2million ($4 million) as said by Coral.

'Euro 2008 was a terrible for all bookmakers and we were anxious for a good begin to the domestic football season. Luckily Kevin Keegan has kept our bacon on the starting weekend,' explained Simon Clare, Coral spokesman.

Previous to a ball had been kicked, Chelsea were 15/8 clear second favorites but have now been brought in to even money by Hills, Stan James, VC Bet and Betfred.

United, the 5/4 ante-post favorites, moved out to 9/4 at Sky Bet, Boylesports and Betfred.

'It might seem an overly-reacted but it is unusual for United to fall points at home and with Ronaldo and Tevez both absent they looked more unfavorably pretentious than Chelsea without Drogba,' explained Hill's spokesman Graham Sharpe.

Arsenal and Liverpool, who both clocked up practical 1-0 wins on Saturday at home in opposition to West Bromwich and away to Sunderland in that order, are 6/1 (VC Bet) and 15/2 (Boylesports, Sportingbet) to win the Premiership title.
