Despair Persists for Embattled Sportsbook

 September 3, 2006, 12:00 pm (2 years ago)
The indicted online gaming company BetOnSports was prevented from taking bets in the United States for further 30 days. An order to this effect has been extended by the federal judge who was presiding over the case.

The previous order, which has expired yesterday, was extended by Judge Carol Jackson of the US District Court. The extension came after a request by US prosecutors pursuing tax cases against the company. The prosecutors stated during the hearing that they were still in the process of serving legal notice of the indictment on the company and expected culmination in London within a week.

The allegation is that the London-based company failed to pay billions of dollars in excise taxes. The prosecution frames the company and a dozen executives, several from related companies in Florida who are the subjects of a 22-count indictment.

CEO David Carruthers was arrested by authorities in Texas and later released on $1 million bail. As expected, BetOnSports fired Carruthers, and also shut down its US facing operations in Antigua and Costa Rica.

David Carruthers, the former CEO of BetOnSports is scheduled in court on Tuesday for an evidentiary hearing.
