European WSOP event attracts top names

 July 26, 2007, 1:41 am (1 year ago)
Poker’s elite are due to gather at the inaugural European tournament of the World Series of Poker.

The event, which is sponsored by Betfair, will start on September 6 and finish on September 11. It will take place at three casinos run by London Clubs International.

The first ever world event to be hosted outside America has attracted some of the biggest names in poker. Phil Ivey, Erik Seidel, Doyle Brunson, Phil Hellmuth, Roland De Wolfe, Allen Cunningham John Juanda, Todd Brunson, Eli Elezra, Howard Lederer, Humberto Brenes and Jennifer Harman have all paid Ј10,000 entry fee to take part in the event.

The recent $10,000 world championship No Limit Hold 'Em came to a fairytale ending as an unknown former Laos refugee scooped $8,250,000.

Jerry Yang, who grew up in poverty in the South East Asian country, before spending years in a Thai refugee camp, came from the shadows to win the event.

"I lived in the mountains, very, very poor. I didn't own a ball or marbles,” he said.

Yang, who now lives in the USA, promised to donate 10 percent of his winnings to charity.

The World Series Of Poker has been running since 1970 and remains one of the most eagerly watched poker events in the world.
